Usually, single-use abrasives are used in so-called ‘open’ blasting applications. The abrasive is used only once because recycling is too complicated, expensive or simply impossible.
Type of contamination, material type, finishing requirements and surface roughness are all factors that determine the right choice of abrasive. With the right type and grain size, the desired blasting result is achieved in the shortest possible time and at the lowest possible cost.
Gritco has a limited selection of blasting media in its range but our experienced dealers often offer a wider range of options. Together, we can help you choose the right abrasive for your applications.
Single-use abrasives are usually angular and therefore have a good ‘chiselling’ effect to remove rust, paint and a variety of other contaminants. With the right grain size and blasting pressure, expendable abrasives are also widely used for cleaning and restoration jobs.
Many manufacturers have given brand names to their products but some expendable abrasives by the basic material name are: Coal slag (aluminium silicate), Glass granulate, and Garnet sand. Stay safe and only use approved blasting abrasives without the health hazards from free silica.
Do not use single-use abrasives in blasting systems where they are recycled, such as blast cabinets or vacuum blast machines. The dust load with single-use abrasives is too high for these systems and will lead to poor blasting results and dust problems for the environment. Recyclable abrasives should be used instead.
